At first the path is easy to follow but then quickly becomes confusing because there are too many different trail markers of all colors. Eventually the going becomes slow because you’re walking in the stream on rocks. It’s then slippery rocks all the way until the waterfall. Every step has to be planned to avoid slipping and getting injured. It’s both physically and mentally taxing. There is no cell service here.
Not many other hikes on the island like this. This is a dangerous hike. You can see the devastation and power of past flash floods through the gulch. Trees uprooted and washed downstream. The debris line goes well over 10 feet up the sides. With that said, don’t attempt if a storm is approaching. Also rocks can occasionally be heard falling from the gulch walls and shattering below.
So why do this? Hiking Maakua Gulch feels other worldly. As you get deeper, the stream snakes left and right and the walls close in. At one point you can almost touch both sides. If the sun isn’t directly overhead, it constantly feels like the late afternoon. You’ve reached the end when you get to the waterfalls. Climb the first one if you’re feeling like a badass. It’s about 15 feet high and you need to swim to it. Don’t climb the second one. It’s 25 to 30. If you look above the second falls you will see even more waterfalls! Incredible! To the falls and back will take you at least 5 hours.
